Brothers Murali and Prabu strengthen rural Nuwara Eliya with Kindness Foundation – The Island
The Nuwara Eliya district in Sri Lanka is famous for its picturesque views, thriving tea plantations and impressive waterfalls. The colder climate also makes it a favorite destination for local and international visitors. However, among the beauty of this district are rural communities that struggle every day to meet their basic needs.
This district is home to some of the most underserved rural communities in Sri Lanka, made up mostly of tea plantation workers and daily wage earners. Unfortunately, these communities are often marginalized with little or no support to pull them out of the vicious cycle of poverty in which they are trapped.
It is in this context that the Foundation of Goodness recently established not just one but three Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centers in Ragala, Kothmale and Hatton in Nuwara Eliya District. These empowerment centers offer free educational, vocational and sports courses such as English language training, sewing, computer training and STEM education, and act as the nerve center of the village by empowering its people. These new skills enable rural beneficiaries to improve their lives and open up new opportunities.
Recently Foundation of Goodness along with Founder Kushil Gunasekera and center sponsors Trustee Muthiah Muralidaran, Muthiah Prabagaran and Snackings (Pvt) Ltd declared Kothmale and Hatton Centers open.
“Murali is someone very passionate about giving and caring for the less privileged and since Murali and his brother Prabu committed to creating these productive village empowerment centers, they have delivered on their promise to the up to their word of honor. He is well aware of the circumstances prevailing in tea plantation communities and as such the number of over 4,000 registered is a record for all of our 15 centers which demonstrates the need to provide facilities of this type for their progress,” Kushil Gunasekera said.
The Ragala Center located in a tea plantation will benefit 1150 rural villagers from 14 villages in the locality. The Kothmale center has registered over 1721 rural villagers from 20 villages while the Hatton VHE center will empower 1198 villagers from 11 villages.
In total, these centers will benefit more than 4,000 rural Sri Lankans from 45 villages, giving them access to opportunities offered by the Foundation of Goodness that go beyond academic and vocational training, such as scholarships , competitions abroad and mentoring.
The total number of Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centers established across Sri Lanka by the Foundation of Goodness now stands at 14, empowering over 10,971 rural beneficiaries from 150 villages.
The Kindness Foundation acknowledges the extraordinary contribution made to expanding our reach in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka by Trustee Muthiah Muralidaran with his brother Muthiah Prabagaran and Snacking PVT Ltd. Murali still keeps FoG in his heart and over the years he has donated many of his endorsement fees in full and has now launched his Cameo Celebrity Promotions exclusively to benefit FoG, ensuring that thousands of Sri Rural Lankans across the island receive free empowerment courses, urgent medical and social needs and help improve the development of rural sports. He constantly promotes the Kindness Foundation and truly believes in the vision of a better Sri Lanka.
The Kindness Foundation was established in 1999 and has worked extensively to develop a unique model of holistic rural community development that seeks to bridge the urban-rural divide. In 2021 alone, despite the struggles caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Foundation of Goodness offered a wide range of programs free of charge to over 68,000 beneficiaries from over 900 villages across Sri Lanka. In addition to its flagship site and project headquarters, the OYOB Center of Excellence and Seenigama Sports Academy, the Kindness Foundation has also branched out to offer its key courses and resources to remote rural villages via the Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centers which strive to empower disadvantaged people. communities so that they can have equal opportunities to excel in life. The nerve center of the village, the Village Heartbeat concept works to give underprivileged villagers access to skills that will enable them to develop fully.
