Costa to sell Nantucket Golf Management if awarded new contract with Miacomet
(December 7, 2021Alan Costa told the Land Bank on Tuesday that he plans to sell Nantucket Golf Management to a New Jersey company if it wins the contract to operate the Miacomet and Sconset golf courses for the next three years.
The Costa company, which has been running the courses for almost 20 years, is the only candidate for the new contract. Costa said he plans to quit and sell the business to Morningstar Golf & Hospitality in Branchburg, NJ
“My goal was to put together a strong team that will work for you and Miacomet and keep it affordable for the Land Bank,” he said in Tuesday’s interview with the Land Bank Commission.
Costa said he will retain an advisory role for three years, NGM vice president Sean Oberly will be responsible for overseeing Miacomet’s day-to-day operations, and current employees from both formations will remain in place.
Morningstar operates more than 100 golf courses across the country as well as in Europe and Japan.
President Matt Galvin said on Tuesday that the company would be able to provide additional resources to Miacomet, including accounting, catering and marketing services. Being part of a large group of courses would allow Nantucket’s two public courses to benefit from economies of scale when purchasing everything from scorecards to golf carts, he said.
The Land Banking Commission is due to vote on the proposal later this month. The current contract between Nantucket Golf Management and Land Bank expires at the end of the year.
