Oak Ridge, Tennessee’ – Los Alamos Reporter

LAJI PRESS RELEASE
Plan to join Los Alamos-Japan Institute (LAJI) co-hosts Clifton Truman Daniel and Dr. Judith Stauber on Monday, May 23 at 5 p.m. MDT for a live webinar on science, peace, and community at Oak Ridge, Tennessee today. Clifton and Judith will speak with Oak Ridge historian Ray Smith and Pat Postma who worked with community members to develop the city’s International Friendship Bell, an 8,000 pound bronze Kyoto bell designed by the residents of Oak Ridge to symbolize the peace and friendship shared in Oak Ridge and Japan.
Ray Smith ensures that current and future generations can learn about the heritage, history, ongoing and planned activities in the town of Oak Ridge, TN. Through print media supplemented by films, presentations, tours, and a history center, he made the history of the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge accessible to everyone. Nearly five decades of experience at Y-12 provide Smith with a deep understanding and appreciation of his unique heritage. Ray also knows the history of the other Oak Ridge government sites.
Pat Postma arrived in Oak Ridge in 1943, where she grew up and later married a young physicist who became the director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Both Pat and her husband were engaged in creating the International Friendship Bell to mark the town’s 50th anniversary. Following her career at the University of Tennessee College of Business, Pat embarked on a second career advancing important community projects, including the creation of the Peace Pavilion, a striking new home for the International Friendship Bell.
LAJI looks forward to continued conversations about peace, now more than ever. To visit www.laji.us to RSVP
