SM Investments: Foundation and Fast Retailing Foundation partner to protect coastal villages
The Grow Trees Community project in Macabebe, Pampanga is the second site of the joint reforestation initiative of the SM Foundation and the Fast Retailing Foundation.
Mario Flores Canilao thought his world was on the verge of collapse when Typhoon Glenda (International: Rammasun) hit his village in Pampanga province in July 2014 and ravaged a fishing pond where it drew its main source of income.
“Yun ang pinakamalupit. Akala ko nga natapos na ang mundo sa akin noon (I thought life was too hard. I thought it was the end of my world),” recalls Mr. Canilao, a professional fisherman.
Despite the blow inflicted on him, he mustered the will and the determination to move forward. Soon, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources asked for his help in planting Bakawan or mangrove trees.
As Chairman of Samahang Makakalikasan ng Pampanga, Inc. (SAMAPA), Mr. Canilao has worked tirelessly with government and the private sector over the past decade to help build coastal forest for the natural protection of their community. in the municipality. of Macabebe, to avoid pitfalls following another storm like Typhoon Glenda.
This year, he is delighted to know that the SM Foundation, the social arm of SM, and the Fast Retailing Foundation, a general foundation incorporated in Japan, are providing significant support by planting Bakawan trees in his coastal community as part of their collaboration. “Grow Tree Community”. project. This reforestation initiative aims to introduce at least 100,000 mangroves of the Bakawan babae and lalaki species to Barangay Consuelo in the municipality of Macabebe, the second site after the official launch of the project in Batangas on September 27. “Malaking tulong itong mangroves para sa akin, para sa pamilya ko and sa king mga kababaryo na magkaroon din po ng hanapbuhay. Sa darating na mga henerasyon, makakatulong ang mga bakawan sa dipensa sa malalakas na allon and hangin (Mangroves are of one great help not only for my family but also for my fellow villagers, also in supporting livelihoods. The bakawan will help the next generation to protect themselves against strong winds and waves),” said Mr. Canilao.
FR Foundation General Secretary Yoshio Ishida (center) and SM Foundation Assistant Vice President for Livelihoods and Outreach Programs Cristie Angeles (far right, front) lead the launch of the Grow Trees community in Pampanga.
In addition to providing natural coastal defense against storm surges, the Bakawan has been widely personified in Philippine fiction and many children’s books for its role in maintaining biodiversity in the environment.
“As visitors, we often see the beauty of the mangrove groves, but for communities it is nature’s shield that protects them from natural calamities and serves as a breeding ground for fish and shellfish”, Cristie S. Angeles, SM Foundation Assistant Vice President for Livelihoods and Outreach Programs.
“A well-preserved mangrove forest can provide an ecosystem of interconnected benefits supporting biodiversity in marine life and a storehouse of valuable resources. Beyond this, the collective efforts of the community are vital for environmental preservation. As SM enables the growth of so many communities, we also empower those communities to lead environmental conservation in their areas,” Ms. Angeles added. “We are especially drawn to this project which is a first in terms of partnerships here in the country. Mangroves have an enormous capacity not only to absorb greenhouse gases, making them ideal for providing climate benefits, but they also enrich biodiversity. Having confirmed the success of this Pampanga project, we look forward to pursuing other such projects in the near future in collaboration with our partner, SM Foundation,” said Mr. Yoshio Ishida, Secretary General of FR Foundation. .
